[Good weather for the last ski of the season] [Tron, Rigmor and Marius] Last weekend I took one final ski trip of the season at Geilo.  It was a relaxing 16km loop in about 2 hrs 15 mins. The wind was against us the whole first half, but it was a breeze the way back to the apartment. I managed to work a bit while I was there, still not enough though. [the EvoFish guppy lab] Today I had my first day working at the Evo Fish guppy lab at the university. There is a room full of tanks that have guppies that were collected in Trinidad. The research group is using the guppies for evolutionary analyses, such as color changes through generations and effects size selection. Every 5-6 weeks, different populations are "harvested." So today we sorted population 1 into two size fractions (less than or equal to 16 mm, and greater than 16 mm). Some of the guppies are also marked with a type of "color tattoo," so those were also separated....yada yada yada...ok......

A tour of Norway in 3 weeks (Part 1)

Mom and Dad came to visit Norway on August 3rd - "No luggage, no status..." upon arrival to Bergen. So for two days they explored some of Bergen in hopes of news of their suitcases by Sunday so that we could begin our adventure. Sure enough, Sunday afternoon, the next flight in from Iceland had landed with their luggage and the tour of Norway began. Our first night we stayed in Geilo, where Marius' company has a condo. The first hike of the trip was the next day with a trip up behind Prestholtsetter, where Marius and I had skied earlier this year. The trail was being worked on by Nepalese Sherpas, and at the bottom we enjoyed some rommegrøt just in time to dodge the rain. [Gjelvågan summer home] The next afternoon we set out for Synnfjell (the Engebrethsen's winter cabin) for an overnight, then continued on to Trondheim. We camped at a town called Levanger, just north of Trondheim. Each day we were fearing the rain, but we were really lucky and did not have a...

Skihelg på Geilo

[The beginning of the trails were often only ice, so I relied heavily on Klister to make my skis stick!] This past weekend we went skiing in Geilo where Marius' work has a condo right by the ski slopes. Both Saturday (to Prestholtseter and back) and Sunday (to Vestreim and back) we managed to ski at least 12 kilometers (return). The snow was quite hard and icy, but Saturday we got some snow falling and Sunday was pure sunshine! Sadly, St. Patrick's Day isn't really a big thing over here, but I still enjoyed a Guinness and listened to Irish music on Saturday.  [Occasional sun and snowflakes makes a happy skiing Justine]  [Enjoying an expensive hot cocoa at Prestholtseter just to sit inside the cabin]  [Look out for falling skiers!]  [Sunny Sunday ski!]  [Vestreim] [Sunbathing at Vestreim]
